Outside of Norway, there is only one remaining medieval stave church which is located in Sweden and was built during the 14th century, approximately more than 100 years after the Norwegian wooden church was built. The Urnes Stave Church was expanded in the 17th century CE, and many of the artefacts and decorations are also from this era. The lid for the baptismal font, which has unfortunately disappeared, dates from c. 1250-1300 CE and is exhibited on the south wall of the church.

Samples from the base timbers reveal that it was felled at some point between 1129 and 1131, but the distinctive carvings on the north portal are from an older church; two previous churches stood at this site, the last is believed to have been constructed in the second half of the 11th century.

They are examples of the brilliant craftsmanship found in Norway with respect to structure, materials, decoration and interior. Urnes church is a fully developed three-aisled stave structure with a total of 14 staves supporting the central aisle. The majority of the staves are placed on ground beams. They are all decorated with cushion capitals as well as carvings with biblical motifs and mythical beasts. The Urnes Stave Church (ca 1050) is the oldest of its kind in Norway.
